White House condemns Pakistan bombing

COLUMBUS, Ohio (CNN) -- The White House Friday called the suicide car bombing outside the U.S. Consulate in the Pakistani city of Karachi a "deplorable act of terror" and a "vivid reminder that our nation is at war."

"The terrorists will use whatever means at their disposal, no matter how despicable, to harm Americans and others," said White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer, who spoke to reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Columbus, where President Bush will address graduates of Ohio State University.

Fleischer said the president learned about the bombing in his written intelligence briefing Friday morning, and then discussed the matter with his national security team.

The Bush spokesman said that the United States has no information that al Qaeda is responsible.

Asked if the United States received any specific threat in advanced of the bombing, another senior administration official said he was "not aware of anything specific."

"It's a reminder of the risk men and women in the Foreign Service take every day in doing their jobs often in these regions of the world," Fleischer said. "Foreign Service is risky service."

The United States is sending its condolences to the families of the victims, the senior official said. "We wish a full and speedy recovery to those injured."
