Democratic candidate calls for economic reform

DENVER, Colorado (CNN) -- Calling Tuesday's election crucial, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate from Colorado said his party offers voters the best chance for turning the economy around.

"Across the country, some 2 million people have lost their jobs over the past two years," Tom Strickland said in the Democrats' weekly radio address. The former prosecutor faces GOP incumbent Sen. Wayne Allard, who edged him out six years ago for the seat.

Strickland is running against GOP Sen. Wayne Allard who campaigned with President Bush on October 28.

"In Colorado, we've been especially hard hit by the worst corporate scandals in our nation's history, by drought and by wildfires. Complacency is not acceptable," Strickland said.

He called for an increase in the minimum wage, job training and tax cuts "for families to make college more affordable."

He also called for tax cuts for "working people," farmers and small businesses.

"And the federal government needs to do its part by balancing the budget and paying down the national debt," he added.
