Sessions projected winner of second term in Alabama
TUSCALOOSA, Alabama (CNN) -- Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions defeated Democratic State Auditor Susan Parker on Tuesday, CNN has projected. A former U.S. attorney, Sessions was seeking a second term and was favored to win going into Election Day. Although he narrowly won his first term in 1996, Sessions, a staunch conservative, was well-positioned to prevail this year, largely because of Alabama's increasingly Republican tilt, Democratic disarray and the senator's lopsided fund-raising advantage. A Democratic poll showed Parker trailing Sessions by just 8 points going into the general election. She won the right to challenge Sessions in June when she beat wealthy attorney Julian McPhillips in a post-primary runoff.
