Carcieri wins Rhode Island governorship

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island CNN) -- CNN projected that Republican Don Carcieri defeated Democratic businesswoman and lawyer Myrth York in the open race for Rhode Island governor.

An overwhelmingly Democratic state, Rhode Island had nonetheless elected Republican Gov. Lincoln Almond to two consecutive terms. Almond was prevented from seeking a third term because of term limits.

York was the Democratic nominee in both of Almond's victories, losing by three percentage points in 1994 and seven in 1998. She runs a family owned financial services firm.

The 2002 gubernatorial election marked Carcieri's first venture into politics. A retired CEO of Cookson America, a holding company for manufacturers, he easily won the Republican primary on September 10.
