Perry, Bush's successor in Texas, projected to win governorship
AUSTIN, Texas (CNN) -- Gov. Rick Perry, who took over as Texas governor after George W. Bush became president in 2000, defeated Democratic nominee Tony Sanchez on Tuesday, CNN projects. Sanchez spent more than $60 million of his own money in the race. Perry maintained a hefty lead throughout the campaign, despite a stream of Sanchez-sponsored TV ads attacking his ethics. He ran unopposed in the GOP primary and benefited from widespread popular support for Bush.
