Renzi defeats Cordova in new Arizona seat
PHOENIX, Arizona (CNN) -- Republican Rick Renzi defeated Democrat George Cordova in a race for one of Arizona's two new House seats, CNN projected. Cordova, an attorney, won a seven-way primary to win the Democratic nomination while Renzi, an insurance executive, won a six-way primary for the Republican nod. The 1st District is a large district, comprising at least half the state's landmass. Democrats have an edge in voter registration, but like many rural districts, Republicans have a strong track record of winning federal-level races. Renzi started the race with a sizable financial edge. But he suffered a setback when Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Arizona, said Renzi had inflated his resume description of what he did in Kyl's office. Renzi's primary opponents also criticized him as a carpetbagger, a charge that stuck to some degree. He grew up in southern Arizona, attended Northern Arizona University but has lived outside of Arizona for nearly 20 years, including a recent stint in Washington D.C. He moved to Flagstaff last year.
