Johnson wins in Connecticut, CNN projects
DANBURY, Connecticut (CNN) -- In a race pitting incumbent against incumbent, Republican Rep. Nancy Johnson defeated Democratic Rep. Jim Maloney on Tuesday, CNN projected. Johnson and Maloney were put in the new 5th District after Connecticut lost a congressional seat. The redrawn district had a slight Democratic tilt and a working-class constituency. Maloney has survived tough re-election challenges since he first won his seat in 1996. But Johnson, who survived a 1996 challenge by just 2,000 votes, fought hard. She dominated the fund-raising race, raising more than $3 million as of September 30, at which time she reported $1.1 million on hand. Maloney had raised just $1.8 million and had $146,000 on hand then. Johnson also aired the first television ad, in May, highlighting her work on "reducing the tax burden on working families." Johnson led Maloney 44 percent to 39 percent in an independent poll of likely voters released September 13.
