Close House races in GeorgiaGOP wins newly drawn 12th District
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- In Georgia's newly drawn 12th District, Republican Max Burns defeated Democrat Charles "Champ" Walker Jr. on Tuesday, CNN projects. Walker, the son of state Senate Majority Leader Charles Walker Sr., was favored to win as the state Legislature also made the district 60 percent Democratic. The district is also 40 percent African-American and Walker is an African-American. But Burns, a business professor at the University of Georgia, made it a tougher-than-expected race by taking advantage of Democratic dissatisfaction with Walker's father. In the re-drawn 3rd District, Democrat Jim Marshall narrowly defeated Republican Calder Clay, with Marshall by less than 2,000 votes. The seat was open after Rep. Saxby Chambliss decided to run for Senate. The Democratic-controlled state Legislature drew the new district as a Democratic stronghold as Marshall, a former Macon mayor, lost to Chambliss in 2000 by 18 points. Democrats increased the number of Democratic and African-American voters in the district, including an increase in the district's black voter population from 32 percent to 40 percent. Republican Phil Gingrey and Democrat Roger Kahn also were locked in a close race for the newly drawn 11th District. In the 4th District, Democratic nominee Denise Majette defeated Republican Cynthia L. Van Auken. Majette, a state court judge, drew national attention in August when she ousted outspoken Rep. Cynthia McKinney in the Democratic primary. Georgia gained two new congressional districts after the 2000 Census. In the new 13th District, Democratic state Sen. David Scott easily defeated Republican Clay Cox.
