Freudenthal wins Wyoming governor's race
CHEYENNE, Wyoming (CNN) -- Ex-U.S. Attorney Democrat Dave Freudenthal defeated former state House Speaker Republican Eli Bebout to become Wyoming's next governor. Gov. James E. Geringer, a Republican, was prohibited from seeking another four years because of term limits. Freudenthal, the Democratic candidate, had touted his conservative credentials during the campaign in hopes of winning over GOP voters. While the state has been largely Republican -- President Bush won 69 percent of the Wyoming vote in the 2000 presidential election -- Democrats held the governor's office from 1974 to 1994. An Air Force veteran and entrepreneur, Bebout was first elected to the state House of Representatives in 1986. He served as the chamber's speaker in 1999 and 2000.
