(CNN) -- PSA Peugeot-Citroën has proved to be one of the most successful carmakers and is gunning for Volkswagen's No. 1 spot in Europe.

Peugeot already stands tall as Europe's second-largest carmaker thanks to a rapidly changing line-up of new cars such as the Peugeot 206 and 306, which compete against Ford's Fiesta and Focus and Volkswagen's Polo and Golf.

Its success in the manufacture of small engines, including diesels, has drawn the attention of BMW, and the companies plan to develop engines together.

Peugeot is also Europe's third-largest manufacturer of scooters and motorcycles in the 50 to 125cc range.
