Carmakers: Volkswagen

(CNN) -- Volkswagen still ranks as Europe's biggest carmaker. Its line-up of cars -- including Beetle and Golf -- is familiar around the globe.

As the popular Golf shows signs of ageing, VW's position is under threat from France's Peugeot -- but German automaker plans to launch a replacement next year.

VW also faces problems because it numerous brands -– including Audi, Seat and Skoda -- are fighting for the same customers. VW also owns Bentley, Rolls Royce and Lamborghini.

Its 34 percent ownership of Swedish truck maker Scania has raised a few eyebrows, with some investors preferring that VW focus on cars.

The German state of Lower Saxony owns about 14 percent of VW.
