Telecom operators: Deutsche Telekom
(CNN) -- Deutsche Telekom is Europe's biggest telecommunications company. A former state-run monopoly, the group was publicly listed in 1996 and is still 43-percent owned by the German government. The Bonn-based group is Germany's No. 1 fixed-line phone operator with 57 million access lines. It also operates T-Mobile International with 66.9 million wireless customers. In 2001, it moved into the U.S. mobile phone market by purchasing loss-making VoiceStream Wireless and Powertel Deutsche Telekom plans to float T-Mobile as part of a restructuring programme that includes the sale of non-core assets and debt reduction. The group is majority owner of T-Online -- Europe's biggest Internet service provider with 10.7 million customers -- and operates T-Systems, which provides information technology services. The group has been struggling to rein in costs and sell some of its assets to help pay down its 67 billion euros ($67.5 billion) in debt and return to profitability.
