Telecom manufacturers: Nokia
(CNN) -- Nokia is the world's biggest maker of mobile phones. Based in Helsinki, Finland, the company has two primary businesses -- mobile phones, which account for about three-quarters of annual sales, and wireless data networks. Its main competitors are Motorola, Siemens and Sony Ericsson. Investment bank Merrill Lynch cut its estimate of Nokia's share of the handset market to 35 percent in 2002 from 37 percent in 2001 -- and predicted it would fall to 34 percent in 2003 and 33 percent in 2004. Nokia Ventures is a subsidiary for investing in technology-related start-up companies. Nokia also announced in 2002 the formation of a subsidiary, Vertu, to sell luxury phones made of precious metals and encrusted with gems. The parent company employs 54,000 people in 130 countries.
