Tokyo stocks open higher

Telecoms are leading the gains in Tokyo, with cell-phone plays such as Japan Telecom moving ahead

HONG KONG, China (CNN) -- Japanese stocks opened up on Thursday, with the Nikkei average coming off its lowest close in 19 years.

The Nikkei is up 0.65 percent at 8,493.51 after half an hour of trade, having closed at 8,438.52 the day before. That was its lowest close since April 1983. (Full story)

The Topix is also higher on Thursday, up 0.43 percent to 840.03 as trading gets going.

Bank stocks are again lower, with Mizuho Holdings off 2.11 percent to 139,000 yen. UFJ Holdings and Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group are also down.

But Sony Corp. is ahead 1.85 percent at 4,960 yen, and tech companies such as NEC and Mitsubishi Electric are also up.

Telecoms leading gains

Telecom stocks are leading the gains, with Japan Telecom up 4.62 percent to 362,000 yen after unveiling earnings this week.

Cell-phone competitor KDDI is up 2.83 percent to 363,000 yen, though market leader NTT DoCoMo is down 0.45 percent to 222,000 yen.

Stocks in South Korea are also up in morning trade, the Kospi showing a 0.74 percent gain to 658.66.

Australia's market is also up, the S&P/ASX 200 index gaining 0.32 percent to 2,980.4. But New Zealand's Top 40 is off 0.31 percent to 1,956.02.

U.S. stocks moved a little forward on Wednesday, with tech-driven Nasdaq adding 0.87 percent but the Dow Jones industrial average ending little changed, up 0.15 percent to 8,398.49. (U.S. roundup)

Weakness in Citigroup and Merck weighed on the Dow.
