Sexy calendar to fund science department

EASTON, Pennsylvania (AP) -- Women in lingerie are coming to the aid of the Northampton Community College science department.

Well, at least pictures of them.

Jon Ganz, a general studies student at the community college, has decided to create a calendar called "The Women of Northampton Community College 2003," which will feature pictures of female students clad in intimate apparel.

Ganz, who is married and has a 9-year-old daughter, plans to advertise the photo shoots around campus, with a group of students picking the best shots to go in the calendar. He said he will sell copies for $11.95, with the money going back to the school's science department.

He came up with the idea for raising money after a student broke a slide in a science class and another broke a microscope, prompting the teacher to remind students how expensive the equipment is.

Ganz, a native of New Brunswick, New Jersey, who has experience as a business manager for a photography business, said a local lingerie shop and a hairdresser have also offered to provide services for the shoot.

He said the pictures will be in "good taste."

Rob Hays, the school's journalism coordinator, said that if the calendar is successful, Ganz will come out with a similar one featuring men.

Hays said the college is mainly trying to distance itself from the calendar and not get involved.

"They are not going to stop it, but they are not going to endorse it," he said. Attempts to reach Dean of Students Mardi McGuire-Closson were unsuccessful on Wednesday.

Ganz said his initial plans are to print 500 copies of the calendar and have them out by December, just in time for the holidays.
