Many diabetics unaware of heart disease link

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Many diabetics are unaware of the most serious complications of their disease, according to a study released Tuesday.

The study, commissioned by the American Diabetes Association, found that while diabetics know of complications such as amputation and blindness, many are unaware of their increased risk for heart disease and stroke.

And, while 75 percent reported experiencing complications such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or stroke, they did not link these problems to their diabetes. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for the 16 million diabetics in this country.

The survey also showed:

  • More than half of people with diabetes don't feel at risk for a heart condition or stroke;
  • Nearly 60 percent don't feel at risk for high blood pressure or high cholesterol;
  • Diabetics over the age of 65 feel the least amount of risk;
  • Nearly 1 in 10 diabetics could not name a serious complication of the disease;
  • Awareness of risk is lower among the elderly, African-Americans and Hispanics.
  • According to the survey, many diabetics are not aware of ways to reduce the risks of heart attack and stroke. It also found that while diabetics talk regularly with their health care providers, discussions about heart disease and prevention are infrequent.

    The survey included people with both Type 1, or juvenile, diabetes and Type 2, or adult-onset diabetes.
