Ryder pleads not guilty in shoplifting case

Winona Ryder
Prosecutors say Ryder, shown arriving at a June 6 hearing, stole $6,000 in items from Saks Fifth Avenue.

BEVERLY HILLS, California (CNN) -- Actress Winona Ryder pleaded not guilty Friday to charges stemming from an alleged shoplifting incident last December at a Beverly Hills department store.

Ryder was arraigned Friday after a judge last week ordered her to stand trial on four counts of shoplifting, burglary, vandalism and illegal drug possession.

The trial date was tentatively scheduled for August 15, and the next court date is set for July 15, said Sandi Gibbons, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

Ryder is accused of shoplifting about $6,000 worth of goods from Saks Fifth Avenue on December 12.

Her attorney, Mark Geragos, said after the preliminary hearing last week that his client would be proven innocent.

"I believe that Saks targeted her. I've got evidence that Saks targeted her," he said. "Why have they decided to pick on this woman? My position is she didn't steal these items."

Deputy District Attorney Julie Jurek disagreed.

"The people have a very strong case," she said. "The defendant has been held to answer, and we will now be preparing for trial."

Police said Ryder, who previously pleaded not guilty to the charges, was arrested outside Saks because she allegedly shoplifted numerous women's hair accessories, handbags and various items of women's clothing.
