Judge sets October trial date for Ryder

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- With an apparent effort to reach a plea agreement in the shoplifting case of actress Winona Ryder falling apart, a Superior Court judge Wednesday set an October 7 trial date.
In a court appearance, a deputy district attorney told Judge Elden Fox that prosecutors were withdrawing their plea bargain offer. No details were released on what the offer involved.
Fox said the case will be heard by a jury, and he ordered Ryder to be present.
Ryder has pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree burglary, grand theft, vandalism and possession of a controlled substance.
She could face more than three years in prison if convicted.
The star of "Girl, Interrupted" and other films was arrested in December for allegedly stealing $6,000 worth of merchandise from a Saks Fifth Avenue department store in Beverly Hills.
Ryder's attorney, Shepard Kopp, told reporters Ryder is looking forward to her chance to prove her innocence. He said Ryder's case has been treated differently and more seriously than other shoplifting cases.
