Granny foils robbery attempt
NEW KENSINGTON, Pennsylvania -- Infuriated that a would-be robber was scaring a cashier, an 85-year-old woman hammered the man with her cane and foiled the robbery, police said. The woman would not give her name and refused medical treatment after being knocked to the ground by the fleeing robber. Instead, her primary concern was for the young cashier who the robber had grabbed by the wrists and threatened with a metal can opener. "The poor child was frightened and I wasn't going to let that happen," the valiant octogenarian told police. The woman also had some choice words for the man as he fled from the store, according to a New Kensington police department spokesman. Witnesses said the man entered the Family Dollar Store on September 14 and demanded money. The cashier tried to escape from the man, who unsuccessfully tried to open the cash register with the can opener. It was then that the elderly woman attacked him with he cane. No arrests have been made. Naked boater faces chargesSTRATFORD, Connecticut -- An apparently inebriated boater is accused of landing in the buff, stunning diners at a waterfront restaurant. Dale Hallquist, 43, was charged September 11 with risk of injury to a minor, public indecency and breach of peace. The charges stem from an August 8 incident in which Hallquist allegedly drove his small boat onto rocks in front of Knapp's Landing Restaurant and, in front of patrons dining with their children, bent over and defecated. Hallquist began yelling and, when harbormaster Albert Grunrow approached him, a naked Hallquist ran to his boat and wrapped himself in plastic wrap. He claimed the wrap was his survival suit. A marine unit helped take Hallquist into custody moments later. Hallquist is scheduled to appear in court on October 16, according to the Stratford police. Lyle Greene, 41, his wife Francine, 40, and his brother, Dennis, also 40, performed sexual acts on each other during seven stops, despite pleas from passengers and a conductor to stop, authorities said. The three were on their way home on September 21 after partying in Manhattan. The escapades finally ended at the Merrick, Long Island, station after police boarded the train and arrested them. The three were charged with public lewdness and are scheduled to appear in First District Court in Hempstead on September 30. Pot plans go up in smokeFITCHBURG, Massachusetts -- Two men suffered life-threatening burns when they tried to remove $100,000 worth of high-grade marijuana that was hidden in a car gas tank. Octavio Soto, 44, and Jose Cezares, 23, are recovering at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston with third-degree burns after the August 18 flash fire. Soto has burns over 65 percent of his body, while Cezares suffered burns over 30 percent of his body. While investigating the fire, authorities noticed that a gas tank had been removed from a car and weighed more than it should have. Investigators cut the tank open to find two sealed metal containers containing an estimated 60 pounds of marijuana, which reportedly had a street value of more than $100,000. The fire was caused by an explosion, ignited by Soto's and Cezares' efforts to saw into the tank they had removed from a 1995 GMC Yukon. A spark from the saw ignited gas vapors from the tank, police said. Soto and Cezares will be charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, according to Fitchburg Police Chief Charles M. Tasca.
