Mets' Cedeno charged with DUI
BRADENTON, Florida -- New York Mets outfielder Roger Cedeno was arrested early November 26 for driving under the influence after police spotted his car swerving between lanes. Police said Cedeno smelled like alcohol and failed a field sobriety test after his car was stopped at about 3 a.m. Cedeno was released from jail after posting a $500 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 23. Cedeno started his career in 1995 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He has 194 stolen bases and has a career batting average of .277. He joined the Mets before the 2002 season, his second stint with the team. Another Trail Blazer in troublePORTLAND, Oregon -- Portland Trail Blazers forward Ruben Patterson was arrested November 25 after his wife told authorities that he assaulted her. Police say Patterson's wife, Shannon, had minor injuries when they arrived at the home. Patterson was taken to the Washington County jail and released on $1,000 bail. The couple's children, ages two and 10, were in the house during the incident which can change the charge from a misdemeanor to a felony, according to Oregon law. Patterson's arraignment is set for December 6. He currently is not allowed to contact his wife or visit his home. Patterson, who is on probation for an attempted rape case in Washington last year, could face up to five years in prison if convicted. Patterson is the third Trail Blazer arrested in recent weeks. Rasheed Wallace and Damon Stoudamire were arrested days earlier for possession of marijuana. They were passengers in a car that was pulled over for speeding and a small amount of marijuana was found in the vehicle. The three men were ticketed are scheduled to appear in court Friday. Since the incident Patterson's wife has said that her husband did not assault her and that the situation is a private matter. Patterson was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round of the 1998 draft. He signed with the Blazers before the 2001 season after two years in Seattle. He is averaging 10.9 points and 4.5 rebounds for his career. Former track star pleads guilty to manslaughterSAN DIEGO -- A San Diego State University track record-holder pleaded guilty Nov. 26 to involuntary manslaughter in the death of her married boyfriend. Latoyonda Promise Mose, 23, who graduated from the university in May, had been charged with murder in the stabbing death of Allen Hardy, 27, on June 15. Hardy was stabbed in the chest with a kitchen knife during an argument in the couple's apartment. Hardy died June 26 in Scripps-Mercy Hospital. Mose now faces up to three years in prison when she is sentenced on Jan. 15. Hardy, a Marine sergeant, was married during his affair with Mose. The couple had a rocky relationship and often fought, according to testimony during a preliminary hearing in September. Detectives testified that Mose told them she and Hardy began fighting early June 15. At one point, Hardy destroyed a telephone and threw powdered cleanser all over the apartment they shared. Mose, police said, had a history of domestic violence against his wife who lives in another state. Mose met Hardy two years ago at an electronics store where she worked. Mose set indoor records in the 60-meter and 400-meter races and was top 10 in school history in the 100, 200 and 400 outdoors. St. John's player charged with assaultNEW YORK -- A St. John's University basketball player was charged with assault after allegedly pushing a female student into a dormitory bathroom wall and throwing her to the ground. Grady Reynolds was arrested on Nov. 17 and charged with third-degree assault and second-degree harassment. Rachel Seager, a swimmer at St. John's, suffered bruises and a dislocated knee in the attack. She has not been able to train with the team. Reynolds is scheduled to appear in court on Friday. He has played in both of the Red Storm's games this season and the team is standing behind him, according to Dominic Scianna, associate athletic director of communications. Scianna declined to comment on the specifics of the situation. Reynolds transferred to St. John's this year from Southern Union State Community College in Alabama. In the Red Storm's game against Fairfield last Saturday he scored four points and pulled down two rebounds. Seager, 20, is a sophomore and specializes in the backstroke.
