Retired priest, former church workers indicted on sex abuse charges
CLEVELAND, Ohio (CNN) -- Warrants were issued Wednesday against a retired Cleveland priest indicted on sex abuse charges, prompting the city's Roman Catholic diocese to detail the steps it is taking under the church's new policy to deal with such matters. A Cuyahoga County grand jury indicted the Rev. Daniel McBride and 10 others on charges including sex abuse, rape and compelling prostitution. Six of the charged were previously affiliated with a Roman Catholic children's hospital. The rest worked at a Cleveland bar prosecutors said ran a prostitution ring of young boys. After the indictments were announced, the Cleveland Diocese Bishop Anthony M. Pilla held a news conference to make "abundantly clear" the Catholic Church's new efforts to deal with the causes and effects of the "horrors" of sexual abuse as it relates to the church. Pilla said the diocese has established a special commission to strengthen new policies; set up a response office with counselors; placed all priests charged with inappropriate behavior on administrative leave; met with victims; and worked closely with the prosecutor's office during its investigation. The bishop pointed out that more than 2,200 men have worked in the church with exemplary service, but added that victims should not be blamed for coming forward, because, he said, "They can never forget."
