Shanley hopes to post bail this week
BOSTON, Massachusetts (CNN) -- An attorney for a former Boston priest charged in connection with child sex abuse told authorities Tuesday the former clergyman hopes to post bail this week. The suspect, Paul Shanley, faces 10 counts of child rape and six counts of indecent assault and battery. He also faces civil suits. Bail was set at $300,000 when Shanley was arrested in May. Emily LaGrassa, a spokeswoman for the Middlesex district attorney's office, said attorney Frank Mondano contacted the district attorney's office to say his client would probably make bail this week. Shanley would be free once his lawyer arrives with cash or a check. LaGrassa said that process is normally conducted through the clerk magistrate's office during regular business hours, but a bail clerk is always available on-call after hours. Shanley, 71, is scheduled to be back in court Wednesday for a pretrial hearing. The indictment against Shanley issued earlier this year covers a 10-year span, from 1979 to 1989, when Shanley was a priest at St. John the Evangelist Parish in the Boston suburb of Newton. Shanley was the subject of numerous molestation allegations throughout his career in the Boston area. He moved to California in 1990.
