(In Style) -- The event: The 55th annual Cannes Film Festival in France; May 15-26. Photographers from around the world gather here each year to snap the stars' every move during the 12-day fest. And whether lunching alfresco at the Majestic Beach Club, mixing for cocktails at the Hotel du Cap or gliding down the red carpet at the Grand Théâtre Lumière, the stars turn it on -- in style.

THE ATENDEES

Sharon Stone (a festival juror), Woody Allen, Jack Nicholson, Patricia and Rosanna Arquette, Debra Messing, Christina Ricci.

THE DRESS CODE

Designer gowns (from Versace to Chanel) were sexy and bare. For less formal events, casual jeans, halters and strappy stilettos were the uniform of choice.

THE HIGHLIGHTS

The festival opened with a screening of Allen's "Hollywood Ending," attended by the famously reclusive New Yorker himself; May 23rd's annual Amfar benefit and auction ($100,000 diamond necklace, anyone?) hosted by Stone, Elizabeth Taylor and Elton John.

Nicholson, attending this year for the upcoming About Schmidt, famously made 1969's fest by bringing the print of "Easy Rider" himself. "Cannes is where I met all the people I know in the film business," Nicholson said. Chloë Sevigny, who was in town promoting Olivier Assayas's "Demonlover" -- in which she plays an American in Paris and speaks French—said about Hollywood: "If only the studios knew what to do with me!"
