Hurley spurns Bing's $2.9 million

Hurley:
Hurley: "Damian and I are managing very well by ourselves."

LONDON, England -- Actress Liz Hurley has rejected an offer of $2.9 million from the American millionaire father of her baby son towards its upbringing.

The 37-year-old actress said Steve Bing's offer to pay into a trust for Damian was "not wanted or welcome" and that she was refusing the cash.

However, a spokeswoman for Bing told the UK's Press Association that it was not for the mother to turn away financial support for the child.

Bing had said he was keen to make "generous" provision for the youngster -- born in April -- after DNA tests in June showed he was the father. He secured a court order requiring him to make payments of £100,000 ($160,000) each year until the youngster was 18.

Film producer Bing said he was "delighted" the matter had been concluded.

But shortly after a statement was issued on his behalf explaining the payments, Hurley said she did not want the money.

Her statement quoted by PA said: "I have always made it perfectly clear to Stephen Bing, the father of my son Damian, that I don't want any financial help from him whatsoever.

"However, following legal proceedings instigated by himself and opposed by me, it appears that one cannot stop someone trying to give you money.

"Fortunately one can refuse to accept it. This I have done."

"I know that £100,000 a year is an enormous sum of money to Mr. Bing and I fully appreciate his generosity towards his son.

"However my position remains the same. The money is not wanted or welcome. Damian and I are managing very well by ourselves."

Trust fund

The statements suggest there is still much bitterness between the pair.

Bing's representatives had said the court order -- made "by consent" -- would see him paying £100,000 each year from January 1 "until Damian is 18 or a further order is made".

The statement added: "Mr. Bing is delighted that the matter has been concluded and that he is able to honour his pledge to make generous provision for his son."

A spokeswoman said the money would be paid into a trust fund for Damian regardless of whether Hurley said she refused the money.

"It's not the mother's right to turn away support for the child," she said. Film producer Bing, who is reported to worth about $250 million, began legal proceedings two weeks after the April 4 birth to establish the identity of the father.

The one-time face of Estee Lauder began an 18-month relationship with the multi-millionaire playboy soon after splitting from long-term love Hugh Grant, star of Four Weddings and a Funeral.

She immediately named Bing as the father when it emerged she was pregnant, but was "deeply distraught" when Bing issued a statement casting doubt on her claims. He said they were "not in an exclusive relationship when she became pregnant."
