Top 10 2002 films
By Alisha Davis
(CNN) -- As we approach the end of the year, I thought I would share my picks for the top 10 films for 2002. 'Y Tu Mama Tambien': Don't let the subtitles stop you from enjoying this steamy Mexican film about two boys and an older woman who set out on road trip to escape Mexico City. 'Gangs of New York': Martin Scorsese's epic tale of warring gangs in mid-19th century lower Manhattan was well worth the wait. Daniel Day-Lewis is ferociously good in this film, and credit Leonardo DiCaprio for not getting blown off the screen by him. 'The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers': I admit I don't love it as much as some of Tolkien's rabid fans, but this is epic moviemaking by a brilliant director. 'Bowling for Columbine': Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore talks to everyone from Marilyn Manson to Charlton Heston with a lot of real people in between in his quest to find out why there are so many gun deaths in United States. It's a great question, isn't it? 'Chicago': Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta Jones shimmer in this razzle-dazzle adaptation of the Bob Fosse Broadway show. Take it from someone who didn't like "Moulin Rouge:" Roughly half of this movie musical is sung, and the whole film is a high note. '8 Mile': Just think, the last time a popular white rap star got his own movie audiences got Vanilla Ice in 1991's "Cool As Ice." Thanks to Eminem, we've come a long way, baby. 'Far From Heaven': Director Todd Haynes' lush and loving tribute to the Douglas Sirk movies of the 1950s. Julianne Moore should have a little golden man named Oscar to display on her mantle in a few months for this one. 'The Hours': I haven't seen it, yet (the film doesn't open nationwide until January and I'm not based in one of those "selected cities" where it's playing now), but based on the near unanimous praise from critics, including those I trust, I'll make a leap of faith. 'About Schmidt': Ditto. And it has Jack Nicholson to boot! 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding': No, this isn't great cinema in the italicized, French sense of the word. But it was an independent movie that turned a connection with audiences into a big fat box office success instead of falling back on the kind of deep-pocketed blitzkrieg marketing campaigns that made "Scooby Doo" a hit, OK? Tell me that's not one of the top 10 achievements to applaud in moviemaking this year. Feel free to disagree: Shoot me an email at thescoop@cnn.com, and let me know your best and worst for 2002.
