Sheryl Crow: 'Soak up the Sun'

(In Style) -- When Sheryl Crow went to Hawaii to shoot the video for "Soak up the Sun," the debut single from her fifth album, "C'mon, C'mon," the song title proved less than prophetic. The first day of shooting was a washout.

On the second day, the crew presented Crow with a custom-made surfboard for her 40th birthday. "I couldn't have asked for a sweeter birthday," says Crow. "And I couldn't wait to go surfing."

Soon she started catching waves and winning raves. Not bad for a beginner, especially since she was surfing with pros like Malia Jones and Pake. "You're up on a wave feeling the force of nature and abandoning all fear, she says. "I was so psyched I thought I was going to come out of my skin!"

"This is very sexy, slightly polished surfer hair," says hairstylist Peter Butler. He applied Fudge Oomf Booster ($13; 888-383-4387) to damp locks before blow-drying straight. Then he set sections in Velcro rollers for 20 minutes. Finally, he misted on Phytolaque Soie ($16; 800-557-4986) and, to create different textures, made waves with a curling iron on certain sections of her hair.

Face

"I wanted a classic Saint-Tropez tan to bring out her skin tone and lashes," says makeup artist Scott Barnes. He applied Body Bling cream and more than 10 coats of black mascara to the top and bottom eyelashes; both are from his upcoming line of cosmetics.

Clothes

"The concept was to make her look like a rock star and yet fit in with the surfers," says stylist Linda Medvene. "I'd wear this stuff every day," enthuses Crow. "The accessories were really earthy."
