Start spreading the news: Post office memorializes Sinatra
CNN Washington Bureau WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The main post office in Hoboken, New Jersey, will be named after Frank Sinatra under a bill that House legislators are expected to pass Wednesday. Sinatra, who was born in the northern New Jersey city, was described as "New Jersey's proudest son" by Rep. Bob Menendez, D-New Jersey, who sponsored the legislation. "Naming Hoboken's main post office after the late Frank Sinatra honors and recognizes Hoboken's number one star, legend and protégé," Menendez said in a written statement. "And while naming a post office after New Jersey's proudest to some may seem unusual, the symbolism is unmistakable; like Sinatra's voice and music, the postal service brings people -- family and friends -- together." The building will be known as the Frank Sinatra Post Office Building. Similar legislation already passed the Senate. The House vote had been expected Tuesday but was delayed. Sinatra was born in Hoboken in 1915. His professional career began in 1939 as he joined bands led by Harry James and Tommy Dorsey. He remained one of the nation's most popular singers throughout his life, even through the emergence of rock music in the 1960s. One of his nine Grammy awards came for the song "It Was a Very Good Year" in 1965. His ninth Grammy came in 1996, for "Duets II." Sinatra also had a successful film career, winning a best supporting actor Oscar for the film "From Here to Eternity" in 1954. Sinatra died in 1998, at age 82. |
