'Hairspray' opening
InStyle (InStyle) -- The event: Opening night and the after-party of the new Broadway musical "Hairspray," based on John Waters's 1988 cult movie. THE GUEST LISTCast members Harvey Fierstein and Marissa Jaret Winokur, Sarah Jessica Parker (resplendent in a black Narciso Rodriguez dress) and husband Matthew Broderick sporting a Waters-esque moustache, Waters, Ricki Lake, Rosie O'Donnell, Nathan Lane, Martin Short, Kathleen Turner, Bette Midler and others. THE SETTINGNew York's Roseland Ballroom was transformed into an early sixties fantasy for the party, with pink fabric studded with old 45s hanging on the walls, and huge towering beehive wigs dripping with curlers as table centerpieces. The retro menu included meatloaf, peas and carrots, mac and cheese, and green and yellow Jell-O molds. REBEL WITH A CAUSE
Did an early scuffle with Baltimore authorities prompt Waters to make a movie about an idealistic teenager who fights for equality on the dance floor? Waters was ejected from the Catholic Youth Organization for doing the "dirty boogie," which he declined to demonstrate at the party.
