Ms Dynamite blasts Mercury rivals
LONDON, England -- Rapper Ms Dynamite has become the first solo black female artist to pick up the UK's prestigious Mercury Music Prize. The 21-year-old Londoner won the £20,000 prize for her debut album "A Little Deeper" and beat rivals The Streets and The Coral. "I feel really happy and excited that my music has been acknowledged. The most important thing to me is that the judges have acknowledged the messages that are going on and people are acknowledging them," she said. The Mercury has tended to catch the spirit of the times with Roni Size capturing the award in 1997 as "drum and bass" made it big. Three of this year's shortlisted acts were from the urban music scene – MS Dynamite, the Streets and Roots Manuva.
It is the second female winner in succession, with PJ Harvey becoming the first woman to win last year. Ms Dynamite, whose real name is Naomi McLean-Daley, said: "I really don't know what to say. I've never been speechless. Oh my goodness." "I know it's a cliche but I feel everyone who was nominated here tonight is a winner." She pledged to give the prize money to charity although she admitted she had not decided which one. Past winners have included Pulp, Primal Scream and Badly Drawn Boy.
