LONDON, England -- Rock legend David Bowie has briefly revived his alter-ego Ziggy Stardust on the stage where he killed him off 29 years ago.

The 55-year-old star became Ziggy Stardust once again for just two songs at a one-off London show to mark the refurbishment of the Hammersmith Odeon.

Bowie last played the venue -- now the Carling Apollo -- on July 3, 1973 on what was the last appearance of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars.

In a career spanning 35 years, Bowie has forged a trail-blazing path as one of the most innovative and influential artists in rock history, constantly reinventing himself with characters such as Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and the Thin White Duke.

That night he played a set featuring numerous songs from the Ziggy Stardust, Hunky Dory and Aladdin Sane albums, including 'Ziggy Stardust,' 'Moonage Daydream,' 'Changes,' and 'Space Oddity.'

At the end he told fans: "Everybody...this has been one of the greatest tours of our lives.

"Of all of the shows on this tour, this particular show will remain with us the longest because not only is it...not only is it the last show of the tour, but its the last show that we'll ever do. Thank you."

But on Wednesday Bowie turned back the clock by performing 'Ziggy Stardust' and 'Moonage Daydream' again.

Looking around the venue he sighed: "Ah, this place -- blimey. "We did a good job didn't we?"

Joking about the collection of songs, he told the audience: "It's an interesting selection of songs tonight.

"Going back from today through the naughties, nineties, eighties and seventies, sixties, fifties, forties, thirties, back to the naughties then into minus numbers."

The set included 'Life On Mars,' 'Ashes To Ashes,' 'China Girl,' 'Breaking Glass' and 'Absolute Beginners,' as well as tracks from his acclaimed new album, Heathen.

Among the audience was Boy George, who was made up with a Ziggy flash across his face, producer Brian Eno and Queen drummer Roger Taylor.
