Oasis star awaits news on charges

MUNICH, Germany -- Oasis singer Liam Gallagher is waiting to hear whether German police will charge him for assaulting an officer after a fight in which he lost his two front teeth.

The star is being investigated after allegedly kicking an officer in the chest who was trying to bust-up the fight at a Munich hotel nightclub, the Bayerischer Hof hotel.

Local media said Gallagher, 30, could be charged with grievous bodily assault and resisting arrest for beating a number of people, including a police officer. If convicted he faces up to two years in prison.

A statement on the official Oasis Web site said they were involved in an "unprovoked attack" at the nightclub but police rejected that version and said an altercation broke out between members of the band.

Munich police spokesman Christoph Reichenbach told Reuters on Tuesday: "According to witness statements they started hitting each other and were shoving each other around in the nightclub.

"In the midst of all of this one of the musicians fell on a table at which a group of five to six Italians were sitting. A brawl ensued -- band members and their security guards attacked other guests in the club.

"Hotel staff contacted the police, who were at the scene within a few minutes. One of the officers was kicked in the chest with full force by Liam and suffered minor injuries."

The police arrested five people -- Gallagher, two other band members and two of their security people. Liam's brother Noel, the band's lead guitarist, was not involved.

The Oasis management paid about £60,000 ($100,000) to bail Gallagher from jail.

Munich's state prosecutor Anton Winkler told reporters the bail could be used as a fine if Gallagher is convicted.

"Liam Gallagher sustained facial injuries, including several broken teeth, while two of the group's security guards were forced to seek hospital treatment, one after being knocked unconscious," the band's Web site said.

Oasis became hugely popular in the mid-1990s. The group's 1995 album "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" debuted at No. 1 in the UK and became the second-best selling album in British history.

However, their success has often been overshadowed by sibling feuding between Liam and Noel. The band's lead guitarist once quit an American tour and later refused to tour with Liam in Europe.

In August this year, Oasis cancelled several sell-out shows in the United States after Noel Gallagher, bass player Andy Bell and keyboard player Jay Darlington were injured in a head-on car crash.

Oasis started the European leg of their world tour in November and are due to play in the United Kingdom in December.
