New AFI awards show airs Saturday

These new awards go to both film and TV

(CNN) -- You have the highbrow New York and L.A. film critics awards, the comparatively lowbrow People's Choice Awards, the inside-Hollywood Oscars and the enigmatic Golden Globes.

And now, it's the inaugural American Film Institute (AFI) Awards, a contest that appears to be staking new ground with an eclectic mix of judges -- including filmmakers, performers, critics and scholars -- and an unconventional slate of nominees.

The show airs at 8 p.m. EST Saturday on CBS from the Beverly Hills Hotel in California. Actor Dustin Hoffman is to appear as the keynote speaker.

"AFI Awards will add another volume to the history of American film and television by creating an almanac of annual achievement for future generations," AFI Director and CEO Jean Picker Firstenberg said in a prepared statement.

The judges include critic David Ansen of Newsweek, Time magazine critic Richard Corliss, actress Shirley MacLaine, writer and director Amy Heckerling, actor Rod Steiger, director Spike Jonze and Robert Thompson of Syracuse University.

Here's a look at some of the nominees in the 19 categories:

For movie of the year, the nominees are "A Beautiful Mind," "Black Hawk Down," "In the Bedroom," "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings," "The Man Who Wasn't There," "Memento," "Monster's Ball," "Moulin Rouge," "Mulholland Drive" and "Shrek."

Laura Elena Harring stars in "Mulholland Drive," another movie nominated in the AFI Awards' best-film category.

Actor of the year nominees include Russell Crowe in "A Beautiful Mind," Billy Bob Thornton in "The Man Who Wasn't There," Denzel Washington in "Training Day" and Tom Wilkinson in "In the Bedroom."

Female actor of the year nominees are Halle Berry in "Monster's Ball," Stockard Channing in "The Business of Strangers," Sissy Spacek in "In the Bedroom" and Naomi Watts in "Mulholland Drive."

Among television shows, the nominees for drama include "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Six Feet Under," "The Sopranos" and "The West Wing." Comedy nominees are "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Everybody Loves Raymond," "Malcolm in the Middle" and "Sex and the City."

Scheduled presenters at the event include Joan Allen, Patricia Heaton. Samuel L. Jackson, Allison Janney, Haley Joel Osment, Michelle Pfeiffer and Diane Keaton.
