New AFI awards show airs SaturdayThese new awards go to both film and TV
(CNN) -- You have the highbrow New York and L.A. film critics awards, the comparatively lowbrow People's Choice Awards, the inside-Hollywood Oscars and the enigmatic Golden Globes. And now, it's the inaugural American Film Institute (AFI) Awards, a contest that appears to be staking new ground with an eclectic mix of judges -- including filmmakers, performers, critics and scholars -- and an unconventional slate of nominees. The show airs at 8 p.m. EST Saturday on CBS from the Beverly Hills Hotel in California. Actor Dustin Hoffman is to appear as the keynote speaker. "AFI Awards will add another volume to the history of American film and television by creating an almanac of annual achievement for future generations," AFI Director and CEO Jean Picker Firstenberg said in a prepared statement. The judges include critic David Ansen of Newsweek, Time magazine critic Richard Corliss, actress Shirley MacLaine, writer and director Amy Heckerling, actor Rod Steiger, director Spike Jonze and Robert Thompson of Syracuse University.
