A few surprises highlight SAG award nominations

Russell Crowe, who won a Golden Globe for "A Beautiful Mind," has been nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award.

(CNN) -- The announcement Tuesday of Screen Actors Guild Award nominations failed to make Oscar predictions any more certain in an awards season that has yet to produce the usual front-runners.

Yes, the SAG nods featured some familiar faces.

Sissy Spacek, already a Golden Globe winner for "In the Bedroom," was nominated for best actress. Russell Crowe, who won a Globe for "A Beautiful Mind," also snagged a best actor nomination.

Moreover, the two stars' movies were nominated in the "cast performance" category, SAG's closest equivalent to best picture. Other nominees include "Gosford Park," "Moulin Rouge" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring." "Mind" and "Bedroom" received three nominations each.

"Training Day" star Denzel Washington, who picked up a best actor honor from the American Film Institute and a Golden Globe nomination, received a SAG nomination. "Training Day" is a movie that made many critics' best lists but mostly has been passed over for awards. Globe winners Jennifer Connelly ("A Beautiful Mind") and Jim Broadbent ("Iris") were nominated for SAG Awards in supporting categories.

But there were a few unexpected SAG nominations: Ethan Hawke, Washington's "Training Day" co-star; Kevin Kline, for his star turn in "Life as a House"; Cameron Diaz in "Vanilla Sky"; and, perhaps most surprisingly, 7-year-old actress Dakota Fanning in "I Am Sam."

However, Nicole Kidman, a Golden Globe winner for "Moulin Rouge" and potential Oscar nominee for either "Moulin Rouge" or "The Others," was shut out in the SAG nominations.

On the TV side, old favorites

The actors' union stuck closer to old favorites in the television nominations.

Nominees for male actor in a comedy series include Peter Boyle and Ray Romano ("Everybody Loves Raymond"), Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce ("Frasier") and Sean Hayes ("Will & Grace").

For female actor in a comedy series, the nominees were Jennifer Aniston ("Friends"), Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker ("Sex and the City"), Patricia Heaton ("Everybody Loves Raymond") and Megan Mullally ("Will & Grace").

For male actor in a drama series, nods went to Richard Dreyfuss ("The Education of Max Bickford"), Dennis Franz ("NYPD Blue"), James Gandolfini ("The Sopranos"), Peter Krause ("Six Feet Under") and Martin Sheen ("The West Wing").

Female actor in a drama series nominations went to Lorraine Bracco and Edie Falco ("The Sopranos"), Stockard Channing and Allison Janney ("The West Wing"), Tyne Daly ("Judging Amy") and Lauren Graham ("Gilmore Girls"). Two nominees tied, resulting in six nominations in this category.

Comedy series nominated for ensemble work include "Everybody Loves Raymond," "Frasier," "Friends," "Sex and the City" and "Will & Grace."

Drama series nominated for ensemble work include "CSI," "Law & Order," "Six Feet Under," "The Sopranos" and "The West Wing."
