Tips from Alan Cohen

(CNN) -- If you think your life sucks -- or just a part of your life sucks -- Alan Cohen has some suggestions for you, from his book "Why Your Life Sucks":

  • Don't get stuck in the past. "The only place the past exists is your mind," writes Cohen. "Your past cannot haunt you, but you can haunt yourself with it."

  • Don't be fooled by appearances. "When you keep spirit first, you look great as well," Cohen writes. "Looking good doesn't always lead to feeling good."
  • Don't waste your energy. "If you took the energy you are wasting on things that suck and used it for things you love, what would you be doing differently?" Cohen asks.
  • Don't keep trying to prove yourself. That usually means you're trying to please others -- even if those others are long gone. "If you are ever going to receive the approval you seek, it is going to have to come from you," Cohen writes.
  • Don't say yes when you mean no; set boundaries. Working too much? Emotionally empty? Take some time for yourself, Cohen says. Listen to your passion.
