eBay warns users of Net scam
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Internet auction site eBay Wednesday warned its users to be on the lookout for a scam in which regular visitors are asked to send their financial details to another Web address. Chris Donlay, a spokesman for eBay, said some customers were contacted by e-mail and asked to submit their financial information to a Florida-based Web site, ebayupdates.com. The scam was discovered by eBay Australia. The fraudulent site is no longer up and running, Donlay said. "To date, few people have contacted us with complaints," Donlay said. Investigating the incidentHe added that eBay never e-mails its users to request such information. Most customers know this, he said, and ignored the requests from the fraudulent site. Anyone who did send information to the scam site should contact eBay customer support through the company's Web site, Donlay said. EBay is investigating the incident, he added, and reminded customers to keep tabs on their accounts on the site to prevent any unauthorized activity.
