(CNN) -- It's not a bicycle nor is it a scooter. The quiet eGO electric cycle provides a fun and environmentally friendly way to travel short distances.

The cycle is ideal for college students or short-distance commuters in crowded cities. It is the perfect gift for the environmentalist who doesn't want to put forth the effort of pedaling a bike, but wants to enjoy the benefits of a zero-emissions vehicle.

At over 100 lbs, the eGO is too heavy to lug up a flight of stairs. And the $1,400 price may be a bit steep. But it is a welcome relief for bicycle commuters who don't want to show up sweaty for work.

Body dazzles

With two modes, "Go Far" and "Go Fast", the cycle can reach up to 23 mph in about 4-5 seconds and can travel a distance of about 25 miles before needing to be recharged. However, factors such as terrain and the driver's weight can affect the speed and distance the vehicle can handle.

The eGO's slick silver aluminum chassis is eye-catching and you can get accents in vibrant colors the company describes as Wasabi Green, Very Well Red, Chutney Orange and Caribbean Sky Blue.

Recharging is easy

The body holds two batteries that take six to eight hours to charge. One cable is all that is needed to connect the cycle to a three-pronged wall socket.

You'll be able to travel up to 8,000 miles before needing to replace the batteries. The manufacturer, eGO Vehicles, suggests keeping the cycle plugged in while not using it.

Although not recommended, the eGO is also designed to withstand the rain. You're not supposed to get shocked while riding the cycle, since all high-current wires and circuitry are fully insulated.

The pedal-less cycle is also equipped with a high-intensity halogen headlight and a bright LED tail light/brake for safety. There's also a standard rear rack for bringing along any small cargo.
