Microphone brings karaoke home
By Jeordan Legon
(CNN) -- Now with a little money, you can sing like a crow and sound like a canary. The new IVL Karaoke TVStar All In One Microphone lets you plug the unit into your TV and within moments, you can be belting out your own rendition of Abba's "Dancing Queen." The microphone, which retails for about $70, is relatively small and easy to install. Just plug it into the video input jack on your television and up pops the menu. Now you can select a song and follow the words on the screen. The background graphics are not that pretty and it may take a while to get the hang of all the functions. Hooked on karaokeKaraoke, which translated literally from Japanese means "empty orchestra," has warbled its way into the American living room. There are other machines on the market, ranging in price from $30 to several hundred dollars. Singing Starz Video Karaoke Machine, for example, has a built in video camera that can project your image on the screen while you perform a song. You can also tape the performance using a video cassette recorder. The video images are grainy and the sound quality is not great, but for about $90, this makes a fun toy. And the E-kara Karaoke Player is similar to the Karaoke TVStar Microphone, except it has a lower price (about $50) and fewer songs come standard with the unit. Shower singers rejoiceIVL Technologies Ltd., a Canadian company that owns the patent to the TVStar Microphone, builds equipment to adjust the voices of professional musicians. With the push of a button, the microphone can adjust your key so you sound better. It also can add reverb, slow the tempo and make you sound like a man or woman. The gadget comes with 50 songs built in and you can add up to 100 more. To add more songs, you'll have to visit ONKEYSONGS.com. The site offers dozens of tunes including: American Idol's "A Moment Like This," Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive," and the Village People's "Y.M.C.A." The cost of each song you download? $1.49. The cost of hearing your uncle Bob croon "You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman?" Priceless. Daniel Sieberg contributed to this report.
