Venezuela changes entry requirement(CNN) -- Americans planning to travel to Venezuela should check the expiration date on their passport before booking the trip.
The country now requires U.S. citizens to have at least six months remaining on their passport to enter the country, according to a statement from the U.S. State Department. Although the requirement is not routinely enforced, some people have been denied entry, the statement says. The State Department has urged caution for U.S. travelers in Venezuela due to the country's political instability. President Hugo Chavez survived a coup attempt in April. Americans can apply for a passport at many courts, post offices, municipal offices and libraries throughout the United States. Renewals often can be handled by mail. An application for a new passport costs $60 for those over age 16, and a renewal is $40. The process usually takes about six weeks, but expedited two-week service is available for an additional fee of $35. |
