Pilot resigns amid drinking allegations

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- An Atlantic Southeast Airlines pilot under investigation for allegedly reporting to work intoxicated has resigned, a spokesman for the Atlanta, Georgia-based airline said Wednesday.

The pilot tried to board his plane in Wilmington, North Carolina, on Sunday morning for a flight to Atlanta, but a security agent stopped him, suspecting he might be drunk, according to the airline. The pilot's name has not been released.

The airline has been investigating the case -- including tests administered Sunday -- but has not determined whether the pilot was drunk, said spokesman Kent Landers.

"We're still collecting information," Landers said. "At this point, the investigation goes to the [Federal Aviation Administration] for them to take any further action."

Kathleen Bergen, a spokeswoman in the FAA's Atlanta office, said the agency is awaiting results of the pilot's blood-alcohol tests as a part of its investigation.

The pilot does not face criminal charges in the case because he did not board the plane.

This month two pilots were accused of boarding an America West plane in Miami, Florida, while drunk. The pilots were called back to the terminal, and the airline fired them after an investigation.

The two pilots have pleaded not guilty to charges of operating an aircraft while intoxicated.

Atlantic Southeast Airlines is a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta Air Lines.
