The USGS said the initial earthquake, which struck at 9:53 p.m. PT (12:53 a.m. ET Tuesday), was within the same epicentral area as the Northridge earthquake. There were over a dozen aftershocks to the preliminary quake. Two of them measured above magnitude 3.5. The quakes were felt throughout the San Fernando Valley and in portions of Los Angeles. No damage or injuries were immediately reported. Measuring 6.7, the Northridge earthquake caused over 60 deaths and major structural damage in the Los Angeles area on January 17, 1994. |
