Photo of Seattle's Space Needle found in Afghanistan
OLYMPIA, Washington (CNN) -- A photograph of the Seattle, Washington, Space Needle was found by U.S. forces in Afghanistan, but state officials have been told there is no credible evidence that a terrorist attack is being planned, Gov. Gary Locke said Wednesday. Locke said state officials were told last week about the photograph, which captured the top half of the Space Needle from a distance and appeared to be a "tourist picture." No documents or other evidence indicating that the Seattle landmark might be or might have been a target were found, the governor said. "Federal officials assured us that Washington state is not under any credible threat of any attack," Locke said. However, he said the Seattle Police Department was notified of the discovery. The Space Needle, originally built for the 1962 World's Fair, is Seattle's most recognizable landmark. Rising 605 feet above downtown, the structure contains an observation deck and a restaurant. At the Pentagon, a senior defense official said there were thousands of papers discovered in Afghanistan, describing many locations in the United States. The official would not characterize the locations as terrorist targets nor confirm specific locations, but said that any site in the United States could potentially be a terrorist target. News of the photograph comes two days after President Bush suggested that U.S. forces had discovered evidence that terrorists had been in possession of blueprints of U.S. nuclear power plants. "We have found diagrams of American nuclear power plants and public water facilities, detailed instructions for making chemical weapons, surveillance maps of American cities, and thorough descriptions of landmarks in America and throughout the world," Bush said during his State of the Union address on Tuesday. |
