Recall issued for 2.1 million toasters

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Citing a potential fire hazard, the federal government Thursday announced the recall of about 2.1 million toasters sold under the Black & Decker brand name.

Applica Consumer Products Inc. of Miami Lakes, Florida, is recalling the "Versa Toast" wide-slot toaster because the heating element can continue to operate after use, according to a statement released by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The toasters have been linked to nine reports of fires, including one that caused $6,000 worth of damage to a Houston woman's kitchen. One report of minor injuries associated with the toasters is still under investigation.

The toasters were sold nationwide in stores such as Wal-Mart, Kohl's, Service Merchandise and Bradlees from June 1999 through January 2002. The recall includes both the two-slice and four-slice models. The two-slice model sold for $10-20. The four-slot model sold for $18-30.

The models involved in the recall are T1200, T1250, T1400 and T1450. The model numbers are on the bottom of the toaster. The names "Black and Decker," "VersaToast" and "wide slot" can be found on the side of the toaster near the cooking controls.

Consumers are being urged to stop using the toasters and unplug them immediately. Applica is offering a refund on the toasters. Consumers can call (866) 264-9230 or log on to www.householdproductsinc.com to find out how to obtain a refund.
