Secret Service probes agents' misconduct in Utah

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Secret Service is investigating allegations of misconduct during a recent party in Utah by three agents assigned to an Olympic security detail, an agency spokesman said Friday.

The allegations include complaints of sexual assault, aggravated assault and public intoxication, the Salt Lake Tribune reported Friday. The party was held in Provo, and local police are investigating the complaints, the newspaper reported.

"The Secret Service has zero tolerance for improper behavior or acts of impropriety," said Secret Service spokesman Mark Connolly. "We are, however -- in fairness to all parties involved -- waiting for the facts to be determined."

Connolly refused to comment on specific allegations or the agents' identities, saying only that they were on an "Olympic-related assignment" in Utah. But Connolly did say that, on February 1, the three agents were sent from Utah back to their "respective offices" because of "alleged misconduct stemming from a party which occurred in the early morning hours of that same day."

According to the Tribune, a hotel manager claims he was thrown against a wall and one of the agents threatened to shoot him when he asked the agents and other people attending the party to quiet down.

Four days after receiving that complaint, police received new information suggesting a possible sexual assault by one or more of the agents at the party, the paper said. The Tribune did report, however, that the alleged female victim "has given conflicting versions of events."

The agents were "immediately placed on restricted duty" pending an investigation by the Secret Service's investigative division -- a standard procedure in such matters, Connolly said.

A few days later, on February 5, the Secret Service learned of other allegations from the Provo police suggesting "further possible misconduct," according to Connolly. The agents, who are "cooperating fully at this time," have been placed on administrative leave, he said.
