Man accused in two hit-runs that hurt 25
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Authorities in New York and New Jersey said Thursday the man responsible for two hit-and-run accidents in Manhattan this week may also be connected to the shooting of a woman in New Jersey last Sunday. A joint investigation with the New York Police Department, the Bergen County, New Jersey, prosecutor's office and the Elmwood Park, New Jersey Police Department led to the arrest of 39-year-old Ronald Popadich on Thursday afternoon at his home in Garfield, New Jersey. Police said Popadich returned home Thursday after running down at least seven people at a Manhattan intersection near Herald Square earlier in the day. Police say he had stolen the car from its owner in New Jersey at gunpoint. When police arrived at Popadich's home on Thursday afternoon to meet with his mother, she informed police her son was hiding in the basement. Shortly afterward, Popadich surrendered to police. The Bergen County prosecutor's office is charging Popadich with attempted murder, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes and possession of a weapon. He has not yet been charged in New York City. Thursday's accident left seven people injured, at least four of them in serious or critical condition. On Tuesday, police said, Popadich ran down 18 pedestrians in various Manhattan locations, beginning at the same intersection of Seventh Avenue and 34th Street. |
