At least 24 arrested in unruly Olympic celebration
SALT LAKE CITY (CNN) -- Police in full riot gear regained control of an area of downtown Salt Lake City, after Olympic revelers became unruly in a late-night attempt to get into a beer tent, city police said. At least 24 people were arrested after the crowd tried to force their way into "Bud World" late Saturday night, set up for the 2002 Winter Olympic festivities. The crowd caused minor property damage to the area, including breaking several windows of nearby establishments, police said. Video of the scene showed several young men throwing beer bottles and shouting profanities at the police. One officer pushed a young man to the ground after he approached a line of riot police, which prompted more shouts of profanities from onlookers. "Leave the area now or we will deploy lethal munitions," one officer announced over a bullhorn. Numerous law enforcement remained on the scene into early Sunday, the last day of the Winter Games. |
