Soldier killed, 14 injured in training accident in New YorkFORT DRUM, New York (CNN) -- The U.S. Army said it is investigating a training accident Wednesday morning at Fort Drum in upstate New York that killed a soldier and wounded 14 others. The victims' names have been withheld pending notification of their relatives. A statement from the Army post said that "a field artillery battery was conducting a live-fire exercise when two artillery rounds impacted in the vicinity of a mess tent." The injured soldiers were from the 110th Military Intelligence Battalion. All casualties were evacuated to local hospitals. Emergency units from Fort Drum responded to the accident. Fort Drum, 75 miles north of Syracuse, New York, is home of the 10th Mountain Division, a light infantry force of about 10,500 soldiers. The force recently took part in Operation Anaconda in the war in Afghanistan. |
