Survey: Gas prices up 14 cents in 2 weeks

EL CAMARILLO, California (CNN) -- After a fall and winter of abnormally low prices, gas costs soared by more than 14 cents per gallon in the past two weeks, a national survey said Sunday.

The Lundberg Survey tallied gas prices at more than 7,000 gas stations March 22, publisher Trilby Lundberg told CNN.

 Sample gas prices
  • Atlanta: $1.22
  • Chicago: $1.54
  • San Francisco: $1.55
  • Houston: $1.26
  • Philadelphia: $1.28
  • Milwaukee: $1.44

  • The national average for a gallon of self-serve regular unleaded is $1.35, according to the survey.

"It's the result of another price increase in crude oil, the kicking in of spring demand and the U.S. economic recovery," she said.

Gas prices rose throughout the nation, with no geographical area spared, the survey said.

The most costly gas was found in San Diego, California, where a gallon of self-serve regular averaged $1.58.

The lowest prices were in Newark, New Jersey, where a gallon of gasoline cost $1.15 on average. New Jersey has no self-service stations.

A slump in gas prices leveled off in January, when an oversupply of fuel began to dry up. In addition, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries has pushed its members to limit production in an effort to prop up crude oil prices.
