One of 4 missing Pakistanis arrested in TexasWASHINGTON (CNN) -- One of four Pakistanis mistakenly allowed into the United States two weeks ago was arrested Saturday in Texas, a spokesman for the Immigration and Naturalization Service said. Ahmad Slaman was taken into custody in San Antonio without incident, said INS spokesman Bill Strassberger. While the other three men remain at large, the INS has good leads on their whereabouts, he said. The four men were crew members on the Progreso, a Russian tanker that docked at Norfolk, Virginia, on March 16. None of them had visas, but entered the country after proper visa procedures weren't followed. INS personnel at the port granted them visa waivers without following new procedures implemented after the September 11 terrorist attacks that required approval from supervisors. When the ship pulled out of the port two days later, the four men were missing. INS officials later discovered that one of the men had previously been ordered out of the country several years ago after being arrested for immigration violations in Chicago. Though authorities have no information to indicate any of the men has ties to terrorism, state and federal agencies launched a search to find them. The mistake was the latest embarrassment for the embattled agency and prompted INS Commissioner James Ziglar to issue an angry memo announcing a "zero-tolerance" policy for employees who fail to follow proper procedures. |
