Pilot killed in Navy training accident
CNN Washington Bureau WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A Navy pilot was killed and three other fliers were injured Tuesday in a flight training accident at the Naval Air Station at Patuxent River, Maryland, a Navy spokesman said. Details on the accident were not clear, but officials said it involved two contractor-owned Extra 300Ls, two-seat propeller aircraft. The accident occurred around 2:50 p.m. EST. Among the injured were two contractor pilots and one Navy pilot; they were being treated at Patuxent River medical facilities, the Navy official said. The two planes were contacted by the Navy from Fighter Combat International in Mesa, Arizona, according to Paul Ransbury, president of the company. Ransbury said the Extra 300L is used by aerobatic and air show performers world-wide as well as by the Navy. Patuxent River is a test pilot school and the planes were among many other types used to test performance rates by the Navy, Ransbury said. |
