Pipeline rupture causes Louisiana oil spill

THIBODAUX, Louisiana (CNN) -- A pipeline rupture has caused 90,000 gallons of light crude oil to spill into a remote, coastal area of Louisiana, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

A Coast Guard officer said pipeline operator BP shut down the line early Saturday morning after it detected "drop and flow pressure." The cause of the rupture had not been determined.

The rupture occurred at an area known as Little Lake, a body of water surrounded by marshland, about 35 miles south of New Orleans in Lafourche Parish.

BP spokesman Neil Chapman said flights monitored conditions at the relatively shallow, 6-foot-deep lake throughout the day. The spill was "contained," he said.

Garner Environmental, a company that cleans up oil spills, sent four shallow-water barges and skimmers to the scene of the accident and called in two other companies for assistance, the Coast Guard said. BP also had cleanup equipment on the scene, officials said.

BP representatives at the scene reported no affected wildlife, Chapman said.
